PostSubject: Can my family get into trouble?   Fri Aug 21, 2015 7:51 am

This was in our paper today. I am home alone sometimes, but I do not not get into trouble. I am afraid my mom could if someone turns her in. Should I worry about this? I was going to ask her about it too when she comes home this afternoon. What do you think?

Children age 13 or younger home alone may be guilty of neglect under Illinois state law.

That’s because Illinois law states that “any minor under the age of 14 years whose parent or other person responsible for the minor’s welfare leaves the minor without supervision for an unreasonable period of time without regard for the mental or physical health, safety, or welfare of that minor” is neglected.

It’s the strictest law of its kind in the nation. Only a handful of other states have a minimum age for leaving children home alone. For example, three states list 12 as the minimum age for leaving children home alone, while three states set the minimum age at 8. Kansas lists the minimum age at 6. At least 30 states have no minimum age for when a child can be left home

Well probably not until now, since you posted this and everyone in Illinois can see it.

You're never home alone for more than 3-5 hours and Ryan lives basically next door, so I do not think it's a problem. If it is mom, gets arrested and we just have to bail her out of jail.

I can tell you two are brothers, lol

Personally, I think 3-5 hours alone is too long for a person that is 12 years old to be left home alone. Too much risk of getting hurt with no older sibling or adult there. And I think if you ever got hurt when you were home alone, your mom would be in trouble.

I imagine they could be if a fire broke out, or like what has been said, you get hurt or someone tries to break into your house and it comes out you have been there alone for any length of time.

For your sake, I hope that no one from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is a forum member.

You don't have to worry Jakob, you're not being abused or neglected, you are in your own house, you got food, and a phone and it is never alone overnight.

You're family will be fine Jakob. A lot of people are in the same position with the so called 'latch key kids', that have to be alone for certain periods of time because there is no one to be with them.
I am your mom would not leave you alone if you were not a responsible 12 year old, and from what I see in your posts, you are. Very Happy
